The specific epithet is the Latin word ''albus'' "white" and relates to the bark. Within the genus ''Eucalyptus'', it belongs in the subgenus ''Symphyomyrtus''. Common names include white gum, poplar gum, khaki gum, wongoola, salmon gum and Timor white gum.〔
